Midwestern morels!

So I mentioned in last week’s greenmarket report that morels are now in their brief but glorious spring season?  Having never tried them, I finally succumbed  this week and managed to lay my hands on some.  If you’re in an area where morels grown naturally, you may be able to pick them up at your local farmer’s market. If you can’t find them locally, you can get them shipped to you from Earthy Delights, a gourmet food shop based in Michigan.  (If you’re feeling like a full-on spring produce bender, you can get the “Grand Trio” package with morels, ramps, and fiddlehead ferns.)  I purchased myself a pound; they’re admittedly not cheap, but I figured it was worth a little splurge to see what all the hype was about.

The Greenmarket Report!

It’s another great week at the Union Square Greenmarket!  Spring produce is starting to show up, so if you haven’t checked your local farmer’s market yet, it may be time.  The big newcomer since last time?  Asparagus!  I’ve been eating asparagus like a maniac for a couple of weeks now, but it’s nice to see that the local stuff is finally ready.  Some of the haul from our last report are still hanging around; ramps are still in evidence, but I didn’t see any green garlic. This week I even got the special treat of meeting the producers in person at one stand:
