That’s Gotta Hurt: McCain/Palin Saga Continues

Money quote from John McCain’s speech at the Heritage Foundation yesterday:

Over 50 million people voted for me and Sarah Palin—mostly for Sarah Palin.

That’s a huge slice of humble pie there for the Senator.

Thanks Again, Your Holiness

Let’s hear it for the pope and his public health expertise!  Tuesday, on his way to Cameroon, Pope Benedict let loose with a charmer on the subject of the public health implications of condom use in connection with the AIDS crisis. “[AIDS] cannot be overcome by the distribution of condoms. On the contrary, they increase the problem.”  Is he kidding?

Look, I get why he can’t encourage condom use.  It’s the Catholic Church.  Contraception is a no-no for the traditional, and they don’t get any more traditional than the man in the seat of Peter.  But could he perhaps keep his mouth shut about a public health issue that’s WELL outside his area of expertise?  Condoms INCREASE THE PROBLEM?  Given that they’re currently one of Africa’s best hopes (one of its few hopes) for keeping the spread of HIV under control, it would have been nice had he kept his statements away from epidemiology and closer to religion.

The pope’s solution?  “[A] humanisation of sexuality, a human, spiritual renewal which brings with it a new way of behaving among people and, secondly, a true friendship, especially for those who are suffering, a willingness to make personal sacrifices.”  He also apparently called for “correct behaviour regarding one’s body”.  Mm-hm.  Universal “correct behavior” is going to be coming any second now.

Maybe I’m just a cynic, but I really hope we don’t have to wait for everyone to achieve correctness before we get AIDS under control.

The whole story on Reuters.

Ann Coulter’s Rectum Statistics

Posted in Nailing Palin on March 10th, 2009 by Betsy – 1 Comment

ann_coulterTonight I attended the Ann Coulter-Bill Maher debate at Radio City Music Hall. The event kicked off the 2009 RCMH Speaker Series, tagline: “The Minds That Move The World”.

People, the mind of Ann Coulter is moving the world? Is something being done about this?

After watching tonight, the only explanation is that Ann is very smart, very strategic in the management of her career/persona, and very much lacking in the, uh, shame department. She’s just putting on a hell of a show. As her bookcovers attest, the moment she walks out onstage – tall, flowing hair, tight black dress and long skinny legs – she’s already something notable, whereas her male counterparts – the Bill Mahers and James Carvilles of the world – have to make their living with analysis and, you know, facts. (Ann likes to use what Bill refers to as “rectum statistics”).

Michelle Obama in Michael Kors

Stunning

Stunning

Michelle Obama choose a black Michael Kors shift dress for her official White House portrait, which a little birdie tells me is:

…is a black bonded jersey tank gown, a version of Look 73 from the Spring collection.

Simple but sleek, I think it was a stunning choice that played-up her best asset: her arms. Ms. O has some great guns!

The Wonders of CPAC

Liberal or conservative, political conventions are always a comedy goldmine.  Picture the dopiest, most ardent, most fervent and most delusional party devotees gathered in one room. Now sprinkle that with a dash of crazy, and I present to you CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Committee. Just how right-wing nutty are these folks? Well, when President Bush arrived to give an address at last year’s annual meeting, he was greeted with chants of “FOUR MORE YEARS!”

Yeah.  These people are “special.”

David Brooks on Jindal: It was insane…

Posted in Nailing Palin on February 25th, 2009 by AJ – 1 Comment

I will admit that after following the ’08 election obsessively for two plus years, a large part of me is burned out on politics.  That being said, I managed to watch President Obama’s address last night, but turned off the television for Gov. Bobby Jindal’s response.  Apparently, I missed the most interesting part of the evening. And by interesting, I mean insane.

The liberal and conservative blogs were atwitter this morning discussing how bad Jindal was.  The common theme seemed to be comparisons to Kenneth the page on NBC’s 30 Rock.  Well, I do love me a good train wreck, so I watched. OH.MY.GOD.  If you have not seen it, watch and be amazed by the awkward delivery, the inept arguments and the general crazy.  The Katrina section is especially brutal.

Let me say this with the utmost honesty: the Republican party’s descent into ultra-conservatism in the wake of their defeat in the past two election cycles and their posturing response to the stimulus package has me concerned.  Contrary to what many people think, I do not revel in the GOP’s absolute disarry at the moment.   While my politics are decided liberal, I personally do not think a two-party system in which one of the parties is a big, hot-mess of dissension and anger is the way to go.  To me, a strong Republican party means a strong Democratic party and vice versa.  They serve to keep each other honest and transparent.

In any case, I will leave the more nuanced analysis to David Brooks, conservative writer at the New York Times. If you have four minutes, I highly recommend you watch.  It’s nice to hear a moderate voice in the the conservative wilderness.

Dear John McCain,

Look, I know being you has to be tough right now.  You just ran one of the most poorly organized presidential campaigns this country has ever seen and sold your soul to do so.  The Pretty, Pretty Princess of Wasilla managed to both embarrass and upstage you at every turn, and now you have to listen to your party proclaim her the next best hope.  It’s hard out there for a pimp.  I get it.

But this was pretty lame, even by your vastly lowered standards:

Women Who Suck: The Ann Coulter Award

That’s right, gals.  Femmeiniste is going there.  Fasten your seatbelts because we may be in for a bumpy ride.

Welcome to our new weekly feature, The Ann Coulter Award, where I take down those women in the public eye who make me cringe with embarrassment for my sex.  Our inaugural award winner and target numero uno is Ann Coulter, conservative pseudo-pundit and all-around vicious hate monger who appeared on Larry King’s show this week spouting her usual brand of nonsense. read more »
