Lily

As Femmeiniste’s anonymous “industry insider,” Lily has a unique perspective on the behind-the-scenes grit that goes into creating the illusion of glitz in the fashion and beauty industries. While this does lead her to play devil’s advocate with certain feminist arguments (*cough*weightoffashionmodels*cough*), she always brings an interesting perspective to the debate.

Lily has spent virtually her entire adult life in her profession, cultivating an enviable client list of well known brands.  On the way, she’s also clocked time both behind the bar and as a shopgirl.  This history of employment has bred a savvy consumer who knows more beauty product secrets and tips than she can possibly use in one lifetime (a girl only has so much skin), as well as one with a well-developed taste for fine liquors and exquisite handbags.

A self-proclaimed pop culture junkie, Lily is happiest when the TV is turned to bad reality shows (I’m looking at you, VH1) or Lifetime movies while she’s trading gossip with friends.  She has an unrepentant love of Karl Lagerfeld and Roberto Cavalli that is matched only by her idolatry of Jemma Kidd and Pat McGrath.  She indulges her serious side through a love of Shakespeare and the study of sexual politics; her senior thesis detailed the largely-ignored role pornography played throughout history.  Don’t get her going on Victorian repression!

Before attending an East Coast university, Lily was raised by a hippie mother and a military officer father (who continue to be happily married).  The nomadic lifestyle of a military brat exposed her to the panoramic beauty of the US, and is the cause of her life-long confusion over college students who backpack across Europe but have no plans of ever seeing the Grand Canyon.
