Stila Freebie: Stila Appreciation 24kt Luxe Lip Gloss

Posted in Schmears on May 15th, 2009 by Lily – 2 Comments

It’s no secret that famed cosmetics brand (and the makers of one of my personal go-to lip glosses) Stila hit a rough patch recently.  Still, like the heroine of a good beach-read book, the brand has come out of troubled times with lessons learned and more than a little appreciative for what it has.

My Current Lust

forerunner

When it comes to my workouts, I’m solely a numbers-driven person.  I want to know what I’m burning, what pace I’m running, and what route I’m going at any point in time.  Which basically means that I’m stuck on the damn treadmill, or am forced to go without these vital numbers for a run outside … Which inevitably lead to less runs.

Until I discovered the existence of the Garmin Forerunner 405CX.  More than just a heart rate monitor, it records run time, distance, pace, calories burned and even stores workouts in its memory for easy comparison. There are many more bells and whistles (including the ability to automatically share/transfer workout info with your computer), but – oh, GOD – those numbers!

It’s a fairly expensive little doodad, so I’ll be admiring from afar.

A Short Rant On The “Selfishness” of Childlessness

Posted in Et alia on May 15th, 2009 by Kai – 5 Comments

What is with all the flak that the voluntarily childless receive?  “Why don’t you have kids yet?  You don’t want kids?  What, would they interfere with your luxury lifestyle?  Too messy for you?  Can’t grow up enough?”  I’m sure you know the stuff I mean.  I personally avoid this simply by virtue of being single (the modern world hasn’t changed that much), but I certainly know plenty of people who get harassed on a regular basis about their decision not to have children.  I’m leaving aside for the moment people who just don’t have kids yet, or can’t have kids but want them.  That kind of harassment is a problem all of its own, and one to which I don’t see a solution other than people learning to be polite and mind their own business.  (That’ll be happening any second now.)  What I’m talking about is the response to people who have decided not to have children at all. Not having kids?  It must be because you are too selfish.

Wow

Push, by Sapphire, continues to be one of my favorite (albeit, stomach turning and disturbing) books.  So I was a bit apprehensive when I found out that the novel was being given the Hollywood treatment.

If this trailer is to be believed, it looks like my fears may have been unfounded.  This small, 2 minute and 30 second slice of the movie looks absolutely captivating, yet still every bit as gritty and captivating as the book.

The Greenmarket Report!

Posted in Jersey on May 14th, 2009 by Kai – Be the first to comment

It’s another great week at the Union Square Greenmarket!  Spring produce is starting to show up, so if you haven’t checked your local farmer’s market yet, it may be time.  The big newcomer since last time?  Asparagus!  I’ve been eating asparagus like a maniac for a couple of weeks now, but it’s nice to see that the local stuff is finally ready.  Some of the haul from our last report are still hanging around; ramps are still in evidence, but I didn’t see any green garlic. This week I even got the special treat of meeting the producers in person at one stand:

This small bag should contain more than just sweaty sneakers

This small bag should contain more than just sweaty sneakers

We’ve already covered which products let you skip the gym and still (at least convincingly pretend) to whittle away those last few pounds.

But for those dedicated gym goers out there, what are the gym bag essentials you need to pick up?

Someone, please buy this dress.  I can’t wear this color without looking completely washed out, but it is a TRAGEDY that I can’t buy this.  Okay, maybe it’s not a tragedy for my bank account, but it’s still a tragedy of sorts.  Here’s the front:

Cute, right?  Wait until you see the back:

AAAH!  Want.
