You’re Kidding, Right?

Michael Kors, you are without doubt a talented designer.  Sometimes, I completely dig you.

Seriously?

Seriously?

This is not one of those times.  Please tell me, what was the need for these shoes?  You took men’s work boots, and not only made them into a women’s shoe, but into a platform mule?  With a 4 inch rubber heel, no less.  I’m not sure that words adequately describe how freaking ridiculous these shoes are.

Lordy.

Today’s “You Don’t Say” Study: Men With Daughters More Likely To Vote For Feminist Causes

In a recently released paper, Andrew J. Oswald and Nattavudh Powdthavee examine the work of sociologist Rebecca Warner and the economist Ebonya Washington.

Warner and Washington, through a series of studies, have noted a strong correlation between having children and voting records.  In short, those who vote for traditionally feminist/left wing causes are much more likely to have daughters, while those who vote along a conservative line are more likely to have sons.

This line is particularly apparent among fathers.

Greenmarket Followup: Holy Crap, Morels Are Good!

Midwestern morels!

Midwestern morels!

So I mentioned in last week’s greenmarket report that morels are now in their brief but glorious spring season?  Having never tried them, I finally succumbed  this week and managed to lay my hands on some.  If you’re in an area where morels grown naturally, you may be able to pick them up at your local farmer’s market. If you can’t find them locally, you can get them shipped to you from Earthy Delights, a gourmet food shop based in Michigan.  (If you’re feeling like a full-on spring produce bender, you can get the “Grand Trio” package with morels, ramps, and fiddlehead ferns.)  I purchased myself a pound; they’re admittedly not cheap, but I figured it was worth a little splurge to see what all the hype was about.

Effective, Unusual Hair Removal Tips

shave-legs

Summer’s almost here, which means it’s time for short shorts, mini skirts and sleeveless tops … And for women, that means it’s hair removal season.

We’ve all heard the normal tips (wax the week after your period, use Visine on shaving nicks, etc.), but there are some relatively unheard of tips out there.  Having worked closely with shave creams, razor companies, salons with sought-after waxers and even a well known depilatory company (not to mention being a bit hairy myself), I can honestly say that I’ve actually tested out each and every one of these – and they work!

Tips after the jump …

Good Things Come In Small, Vibrating Packages

Posted in Schmears on May 19th, 2009 by Lily – Be the first to comment

fb3040e92075a7e7_maybelline-mascaraVibrating mascaras have become a huge beauty hit over the past year or so, praised for their ability to separate lashes and prevent clumping.  Unfortunately, the prestige market has had a corner on this technology – meaning that unless you wanted to spend a ton of money, you couldn’t give it a try.

Now, Maybelline is bringing the vibrating technology to mass market at a very budget-friendly price.  Starting in July, the Maybelline Pulse Perfection will be available nationwide for just $15.

That said, brand is giving beauty fanatics (many of whom can be found reading this site) the chance to try it out now.  For a very limited time, you can click this link to purchase right now.

Enjoy!

Not How I Imagine The Fathers Of Our Country

I just wanted to share with you this ad that was honored at this year’s Clio advertising awards, featuring Abraham Lincoln and other characters made out of various nations’ currency.  FYI, it is, um, not suitable for work.

Wow.

Discontinued Beauty Products: The Items I’m Mourning

My favorite discontinued beauty products

I’m in Weekend Recovery mode, so I’m taking the easy way out today: I’m perusing my personal makeup bag for items I’ve loved and sadly lost.  Not for because I’ve misplaced them, but because the brands that once made them have stopped doing so.

RIP, beauty products … read more »

Wildlife Of The Day

Posted in Et alia on May 17th, 2009 by Kai – Be the first to comment

Need a little animal fix?  Try WVEC.com’s Eagle Cam!  The eagle cam has been broadcasting a bald eagle’s nest on the internet since mid-March, when the eggs started to hatch out.  There are three eaglets, which are now getting big.  This is actually fairly unusual; although laying one to three eggs is common, it’s relatively rare for all three to make it to fledging.  (They have a teeny penchant for fratricide if the parents aren’t bringing quite enough food.)  Mom and Dad seem to be doing a good job, though, so all three are doing a lot of practice for their first flight these days.  If you watch closely, you may be lucky enough to see the big moment!

Being as I am a sucker for all wildlife, I have been seriously considering whether my cat would enjoy having an eagle in the apartment to keep him company.  Taco’s response?

Uh, yeah.  Maybe I’ll just watch.
