Betsy’s Spring Wardrobe: Flats!
Today from the Femmeiniste personal shoppers, the first installation in Betsy’s spring wardrobe update: flats! To set the stage, Betsy works in a casual office in the media industry. When we say casual here, we mean neat fashionable outfits, but not “business casual.” As long as she looks put-together, jeans, open toed shoes, and sleeveless dresses or tops are all fair game. Because her office is relatively laid back, there’s a lot of overlap between her work wardrobe and her wardrobe for running around the city. That said, though, Betsy is not the new college intern. They always say to dress for the job you want? Well, it’s that much more important if you already have the job and you need people to take you seriously. Betsy wants to look like adult without looking stuffy; fashionable, but still a career woman who knows what she’s doing.
Betsy’s first request for her spring update are flats appropriate for wearing to work and around the city. New York is a walking city — it doesn’t matter if you bus, cab, or take the subway, at some point your day is almost certain to involve a whole bunch of walking around. We all walk a little less in the winter, but as the summer heats up and the subway platforms start to swelter, walking to work starts seeming like a better and better idea.
So, here are some picks for cute walkable flats for the spring — some classic, some edgy, but all stylish and adult enough for a career woman in a casual office. Buckled flats are a classic; there are tons of variations on the theme. They almost always look professional, but some of them go above and beyond to also add a touch of style.
They even come in open toe!
A pop of bright color is also always fun for spring and summer; it makes it easy to spice up an existing outfit without spending a ton.
And me? I’m always a sucker for a cute metallic, particularly in a fun shape.
So, thoughts and opinions? Other suggestions? It’s our mission to make Betsy our best-dressed by the end of the feature, so feel free to weigh in!

adorable!!! my favorites are the red ones, the yellow ones and the Praris .. but here my imagination is failing me … what do i pair these with, particularly the red Vigottis? the yellow ones with the floral toes are so sweet … how would those ankle straps look on? do you wear that with a skirt/dress only or can you pull that off with cute pants?
I like the first ones (silver) the most. The navy Nine West look cute-professional. I like Bloch, but not a big fan of the look.
Do you know how comfortable they are? If it were me, I might pick any of those based on their comfort level. I’ve had some bad flats before.
I actually don’t know how comfortable any of them are. Honestly, I usually buy flats large enough to accommodate an insert, which makes pretty much all of them very comfortable to walk in. Flats tend to not be padded enough on the bottom for my tastes.
As for the ankle strap thing, I think you could wear them with pants but I don’t know that there’d be a lot of point if you mean either the Bloch or the Corso Como flats — I imagine the pants would hide the strap. Which would be fine, really — they’d just look like ordinary flats. I think I’d recommend against wearing them with capris — it’d just look silly. As for what to pair the others with, I think you could do skirts or jeans/pants — it’d just depend on the specific outfit. Are you looking to wear them with anything in particular?
Wow, these are great. If I had any fashion sense, I’d add my two cents.. What was interesting to me is that comfort level never even ocurred to me. I mean, they’re not heels so they must be comfortable… Guess not? What’s funny is that last summer a guy actually looked at my shoes (flats) and asked if they’re comfortable. My response was, “they’re flat, of course they are…” I just associate “heels” with discomfort and flats with comfort. Guess I’m missing out on a whole world of comfy shoes?
I love the yellow ones too! Here are some cute ones from Anthropologie -

I meant the Corso Como ones – probably silly with capris, but ok with skirts? And i never thought about adding inserts – that’s a good idea … hrmm..

If you’re a lucky 37.5, these are so great:
