Adventures in Wedding Attire

Black is always my go-to color for evening wear.  After all, it’s simple, it’s chic and everyone looks instantly 10 lbs thinner in a well fitting LBD.  Unbeknown to me, however, black is a no-go at weddings. I once managed to horrify Kai by admitting I routinely wear LBDs to weddings, and this has been a long standing argument between the two of us.  I say every dress is better in black!  She says black is whack.  Ok, maybe not in those exact words, but you get the gist.

Well, after a long, cold, dark winter, I may be coming around to Kai’s point-of-view.  The thought of slapping on another article of black clothing during these last dreary days before spring is leaving me feeling bored to tears.  I am CRAVING cheery, bright colors like never before.

So, I’ve narrowed down the search for some color attire to two affordable choices:

Calvin Klein’s Square Neck Satin Sheath Dress in Raspberry:

(note: I realize the dress looks horrible in the picture I posted, but Zappos is the only retailer that has the raspberry in my size.  Check out the red at Nordstrom for a better representation.)

Pros: The empire neckline is divine and flattering. I could easily pair this with black tights to keep my legs from freezing. It’s sexy without being trashy.

Cons: After a more than three months indoors, the color might wash out my pasty skin and satin can be a bit unforgiving with any after dinner pooch. Spanx will be necessary. Also, does it look a bit “bridesmaidy” to anyone else?

Cache’s Matte Jersey Shutter Pleat Dress:

Pros: The dress is so, so comfortable.  It’s sweatpants reincarnated as evening wear.  Also, the royal blue looks delicious with my blond hair.  It hugs my curves in all the right ways.

Cons: The bandage dress and all it’s incarnations is starting to feel tired and a bit dated.  The trendy train may have left the station.  Plus, this might be a bit too sexy for a wedding.

So there you have it.  Thoughts? Opinions? I need guidance with this whole color thing!

Hmm. Yikes. I like both dresses! But yeah, I think the Cache dress might be too sexy. I tend to equate anything in the bandage style a la Herve Leger as being too sexy for a wedding, even though they are incredibly flattering dresses.

I really like the first one! I’m all for color. Spring and summer can’t get here fast enough.

What kind of weddings are we talking about? The satin’s a pretty color, but satin can definitely look a little over the top if you’re going to a less-fancy wedding (and of course at a church ceremony you’d need to cover your shoulders).

I personally rather like this for spring:
    Milly!

And I bet you’d look fab in this:
Black Halo Jackie O Dress in Blue

And it’d be okay on its own in a church.

i love the Black Halo, but alas that is out of my price range for the time being…

  5. AJ says:

chloe, that is totally what i worried about – the sex factor. i need to think about this…

it’s an evening wedding, so satin would be ok for this affair.

The Black Halo dress comes in a whole bunch of different colors, some of which you can get on sale online depending on what size you are. I think I saw the persimmon color on sale for less than what the satin dress cost, for what it’s worth.

By the way, I continue to be fascinated by the demographic differences between your friends’ weddings and mine. I still have yet to go to a single evening wedding.
