Give It To Me Straight

Dear Readers, I have a confession:  I am a fraud. A sham.  A charlatan.  For the past 10 years, I have spent endless time and many, many Benjamins in my quest to maintain the ultimate scam.  You see, I have curly hair.

That’s right; I am a curly-haired girl. Like really curly. Like Barbara Streisand as Katie Morosky curl.  Like Nicole Kidman circa Days of Thunder curly. Like Keri Russell as Felicity curly. THAT curly.  Not that anyone I’ve met in the past 10 years would know.  Oh no.  After years of testing creams, serums and Japanese hair straightening, I have settled on a carefully maintained regimen of a ceramic dryer, a wet-to-dry iron and the one-two, budget-busting combo of Kerastase OLÉO-RELAX and my beloved Phytodefrisant.  It’s not a perfect solution, but it has maintained the pretense well enough for me to have been loyal to it for quite some time.

Well, no more.  I admit this next thought is beyond superficial, but this little, nondescript bottle has changed my life:

You complete me.

You complete me.

After seeing its praises sung in magazines and on message boards for months, I finally broke down and decided to purchase Living Proof’s No Frizz Straight Making Spray for Fine-Medium Hair after seeing it stocked on the shelves of beauty heaven (aka the Union Square Sephora) this past weekend. My fellow Femmes – I am nothing if not a Sephora sucker.

I frankly expected very little.  Suffice to say, I have lived through years of broken  promises from frizz products that claimed they would reinvent my hair.  I ain’t no straightening armature here, folks.  I mean, PU-LEASE.  Look at the claims this bottle makes:

What is it: A silicone-free styling spray developed by a team of preeminent MIT scientists using ingredients never before found in the beauty industry.

Who is it for: Those with fine to medium-textured hair who want a smooth, frizz-free straight style.

Why is it different: This spray formula was created specifically to address the unique challenges of smoothing fine-to-medium hair without weighing it down. Due to its chemical nature, the formula adheres tightly to each strand, helping hair repel dirt and oil. Results improve over time. The exquisitely thin formula weightlessly coats each strand, helping to provide a barrier between hair and humidity
and prevent it from absorbing moisture.

How can any one product live up to these vows?!

Well, I used the product last night, and umm… I was wrong to doubt this miracle.  So, so wrong.   Blow-drying was effortless (in terms of effort; time was about the same), and I only needed one quick pass of my flat iron instead of working each section several times.  My heat damaged hair hasn’t looked or felt this good in ages.  I’ve gotten three, count them THREE compliments already from co-workers before 10am.  The frizz at my roots is gone.  I have stick, straight silky strands.  My massive split-ends seemed to have disappeared. The texture is silky smooth and has none of the greasiness I get with most silicone based products.  I CANNOT STOP RAVING ABOUT THIS PRODUCT!

The only con? The smell. I will be straight (pardon the pun) – this stuff smells funky being sprayed right out of the bottle (like Tangerine Bug Spray?), but the smell evaporates once hair is styled.

Bottom line – Living Proof gets the Femme seal of approval. Try it.  You will not be disappointed.

Of course, as any true curly girl knows, the real staying-power test will come in the wet, humid months of summer. Check back in July for an update.

so glad to hear about a product from a real person-I just tried a new “liquid keratin” product to attempt to cure the bad frizzies-it’s okay, but not as good as it should be for the price. I will be looking for this at my local Sephora.

ooh, bummer. i was so intrigued by the liquid keritin advertisements. sorry to hear it was a disappointment. do give this a go, though. in fact, sephora is stocking “mini” versions of all the living proof products in case you want to sample for going all out.

I’ve just ordered this product based on your review. I have thin, fine hair that is mostly straight but likes to wave on occasion making it frizzy. Hopefully, this will do the trick – thanks!
